Deterrence and diplomacy are strategies to ensure security and independence of a country is protected.

Citizen Armed Force
All abled-bodied male citizens were called up to serve full-time NS. Upon completing 2 years of full-time NS, these men would continue to serve in the citizen armed force as Operationally Ready NS men for another 10 years for a maximum of 40 days per year.
Through NS, the bond formed among the Singaporean men helps to develop a sense of loyalty, patriotism and a shared destiny in Singapore.
The Operationally Ready NS men will allow them to undergo and attend refresher courses to main their competence in handling new weapons and equipment. They also learn new tactics of war.
Improve Singapore deterrence by increasing the numerical strength of Singapore Armed Force during war time. This makes aggressor think twice about invading Singapore.

formed to provide cost-effective and modern technology to the SAF and the Ministry of Defence.
3rd Generation Singapore Armed Forces
This helps to maximise the defensive capabilities through modern technology, soldiers will be equipped to fight decisively in war and respond flexibly in peacetime.
Therefore, the defence industry will help to improve Singapore deterrence by improving the capability and effectiveness of the SAF. It has enabled Singapore to have more power defence weapons and overcome its small defence constraint throught its military research innovations and modifications.

This increase Singapore deterrence as potential aggressors will think twice about attacking Singapore if they know they face the entire nation and not just the armed forces.

Inter-Agency or Multi-Agency Co-operation
National Security Co-ordination Secretariart was set up to cooridnate work among various govt agencies such as Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Its objective is to counter threats from unknown or unconventional sources such as trans-national terrorism. They meet regularly to discuss security strategies, share intelligence, carry out investigation and take joint action against any security threat. Reports directly to the Prime Minister.
This has enhanced Singapore's deterrence as an integrated approach by sharing intelligence and resources among different agencies would help Singapore to better weed out any potential threats before they manifest further.

Military Co-operation
Singapore co-operated with other military in terms of bilateral and multi-lateral military arrangements including joint military exercises, training programmes, military agreements and participation in UN peace missions. It also exposes SAF to fighting in different terrains.
This provides a platform for peaceful negotiation that can come about because of the close military relations that Singapore has built with other countries. Improves Singapore defence strategy and capabilities through incorporating military tactics picked up from other countries and by fighting in different overseas terrain.

Bilateral relations
Singapore has benefited from bilateral relationships as it was able to further promote political, economic and cultural ties with neighbouring countries. As a result, Singapore was able to speed up its economic and social development. Through bilateral relations, Singapore has gained world recognition and respect. eg Japan- technology skills, Malaysia- political, econ , cultural ties. Vietnam humanitarian and social aid.
This achieves a more sincere and closer relation between Singapore and other countries. This safeguards Singapore as both will be more willing to negotiate their differences than adopting an aggressive stand so as not to jeopardise their common interest.

Regional relations
3 main aims of ASEAN:
- Promote economic, social and cultural development of the region.
- Protect the peace and stability of the region.
- Provide opportunities for member countries to discuss and resolve differences peacefully.
This safeguards Singapore as close proximity to regional countries can help more available to Singapore when we encounter conflict with aggressive powers.This safeguards Singapore as Singapore can call on our regional alliance for help in dealing with any conflict with aggressive powers ( nego , mediation )

International relations
The UN is an international organisation formed after World War II to preserve world peace and prevent another major war. Aim of UN is to
-maintain world peace and security,
-develop friendly relations among nations,
-cooperate internationally to solve international economic, social, cultural and humanitarian problems,
-promote respect of human rights and basic freedom regardless of race, religion and gender,
-centre for harmonising the actions of nations.
This safeguards Singapore as no countries would like to challenge the influence and authority of UN, and with Singapore as an active member of UN, we could call on UN resources or the rest of the world for help when we encounter conflicts with aggressive powers.
